I spent several days in a temple in Vietnam to learn more about meditation and Buddhism. It was there that I met Hang Y.

She is a 25-year-old Vietnamese woman whose life took an unexpected turn.

This portrait is based on a deep conversation with her. Just a few months ago, she made the courageous decision to become a nun in a Buddhist temple.

Accompanied by photographs and an audio recording, this project offers an intimate insight into her decision and the values she stands for and lives by.

“The rain is coming, the rain is coming,” the kids at Endtime Academy in Ghana call out.
A few moments later, it starts to rain. We stand under the corrugated metal roofs of the school. Some are eating their lunch, others are working on their homework.
Since the pandemic, fewer families can afford a private school. Only a handful of kids are still here.
And this is not what a private school looks like in Europe.
The rooms are simple. Paint is peeling off the walls. Not every doorway even has a door.

Favelas carry a heavy reputation. Crime, drugs, poverty.

But that’s only one part of the story. There is more beneath the surface.
